Page Rank Demystified

Google Page rankWhat is page rank? Is it important to ranking a site ? These are the questions I want to answer with this blog post , I am sure if you have done any seo before you have heard page rank mentioned on more than one occasions. Most seo marketers and seo companies use page rank as selling factors when talking to a client. Have you heard this before ” we only submit to high page rank pages” . So lets start by explaining what page rank really is and what it is used for when it comes to seo.
Page rank is an algorithm developed by Larry Page and is used by Google as part of their algorithm for ranking website. In a nutshell it basically puts number rank on the popularity or importance of a website from 0 to 10. This number is then used by Google in helping to determine on how important a page is . The easy way to understand how page rank is determined is to think of 3 candidates running for mayor of a small city each candidate has votes cast for them by citizens of the city candidate #1 receives 1000 votes , number 2 gets 2000 votes and #3 gets 7000 votes out of 10,000 people so the first candidate will have a page rank of one while the third candidate has a page rank of 7. So candidate #3 is the much more popular choice and now has much more power so his friends ( other websites he links out too) are going to benefit from knowing him a lot more than the friends of candidate #1 .
The ongoing theory in seo has been you want back links to your website from high pr pages as these will be worth more and help the site rank higher , which has been the case up to the last year. In my opinion Google is now getting away from Larry Page’s page rank algorithm , I believe this for a few reasons .

1.) Google has stopped updating their page rank toolbar with an frequency , it use to be it was updated every 3 months like clock work now we are lucky to see a once a year update

2.)  Google’s lease on the page rank patent is about to expire and their are no signs they are renewing it.

3.) High pr links have stopped working as well this could also be due to reason #1 with out an accurate pr you really don’t know that site still has good page rank

So what does this mean for seo ? Should you stop trying to get links from high pr sites? No absolutely not keep building links from sites with pr just be aware that Google is probably working on or already using something different to determine a sites importance. One of the things I see Google working towards is the use of social signals to determine a sites importance and in my opinion this eventually will all but replace page rank .
